It has been more than 27 years since one of the most iconic love stories of Bollywood, ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ hit screens, but such has been the magic of the film that it is still remembered by all cinema lovers. This was the first time when Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya came together and laid the foundation of a super successful combo which, in years to come, delivered a slew of blockbuster movies like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ and ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’.
Driven by friendship, love and passion of two individuals with diverse background, the film did wonders for the newcomers Salman Khan and Bhagyashree. It made them stars overnight and catapulted them to the highest peak of stardom. Salman became a heartthrob of millions. Girls swooned over him wherever he went. Hundreds of romantic films have come and gone since then, but the adorable chemistry which Salman shared with his co-star, Bhagyashree, is still unbeatable.
Released on 29 December 1989, the musical romantic film, which dealt with the rich versus poor theme in a fresh manner, garnered excellent reviews from the critics. It soared at the box-office only to come down after a glorious run of 50 weeks. Made on a budget of Rs. 2 crore, the film netted a massive amount of Rs. 14 crore and became the top grossing Hindi film of the year. At the 35th Filmfare Awards held in 1990, ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ claimed seven Filmfare Awards.
TRIVIA: Vindoo Dara Singh, Piyush Mishra, Faraaz Khan and Deepak Tijori were considered to play the role of Prem before it finally went to Salman Khan.
